Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you’re having a family-filled (and food-filled) day! I have a lot to be thankful for this year, and at the top of the list is this little munchkin.
Back when I was a librarian, one of my favorite seasonal activities was writing a simple poem based on a template I found in the Mailbox magazine, and even after I was no longer teaching, I still returned to it when back-to-school time rolled around. Since it fits in perfectly with #TBT, please enjoy these poems from 2013!

And because our favorite holiday is right around the corner…

If you want to play along, here’s the template:
When is [season]?
When [adjective] [noun] [verb]
And [adjective][noun] [verb].
When [adjective] [noun] [verb]
And [adjective][noun] [verb].
Then it is [season]!
When I first used this idea in an elementary school setting, we spent some time brainstorming nouns, adjectives, and verbs (great excuse to dig up the thesaurus!) on a big anchor chart, then we mixed and matched words in the template to create our poems… good times! For some reason this lesson sticks in my head as a fond memory, I guess because it was a relaxed afternoon activity right before the holiday break.
