I’ve made it to Week 4 of reading every day! I’ll admit there were a couple days when I almost let my streak go, but I’m hoping that even if I miss a couple days here and there, I’ll try to keep on going the next day. So far, so good!
You can find these pics in my Instagram Stories too (although they disappear after 24 hours), but on the blog I’m also adding my daily thoughts on what I’m reading.
Here’s a look at what I read in Week 4 of 2018!
Day 22: Rules of Civility, by Amor Towles
I’m really trying to stay off my phone during the day, but as a result I’m not reading my eBook much at all. I grabbed a few minutes of reading before bed, but I only read one chapter before I was dozing off.
Day 23: Rules of Civility, by Amor Towles
Same scenario today: no time for reading until the very end of the day, when I’m too tired to read much at all. I really like this Gatsby-esque tale, so I hope I’ll have more time to read it soon. Tomorrow I’ll get back on board with reading during coffee breaks, mealtime, and nap time!
Day 24: After Many Years: Twenty-One “Long-Lost” Stories, by L.M. Montgomery, edited by Carolyn Strom Collins and Christy Woster
I’ll be honest, I’m halfway through this collection of Montgomery’s short stories and I’m lukewarm. I guess I just take a while to warm up to her characters and the short story format mainly serves to deliver a moral lesson and maybe a punchline, but I miss the depth of her novels.
Day 25: After Many Years: Twenty-One “Long-Lost” Stories, by L.M. Montgomery, edited by Carolyn Strom Collins and Christy Woster
Today’s reading was better and I found my favorite story: Jim’s House. It’s a gem!
Day 26: After Many Years: Twenty-One “Long-Lost” Stories, by L.M. Montgomery, edited by Carolyn Strom Collins and Christy Woster
No time for reading today, but I spent a few minutes reading in bed before lights out.
Day 27: After Many Years: Twenty-One “Long-Lost” Stories, by L.M. Montgomery, edited by Carolyn Strom Collins and Christy Woster
I decided it was time for something new, so I put away all my electronic devices and devoted Saturday night to finishing this book. (A true sign of how old I am/feel: it was notable that I stayed up late enough to watch SNL!) I like comfort reading as much as the next person, and L.M. Montgomery is one of my favorite authors, but she re-uses so many of her plot ideas that I feel like I’m already familiar with most of them, and they don’t always stand the test of time. A couple stories stand out, but I hate to say that I didn’t enjoy this trip down Montgomery’s lane as much as I thought I would.
Day 28: When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi
Of course when I want to read something new, I search my shelves… and end up going to the bookstore. I don’t know why, it’s a sickness! But an hour with a friend sipping coffee and browsing (sans baby!) was such a nice indulgence on a Sunday afternoon. I came home with three new books and decided to start with this one. I’ve heard it’s pretty heartbreaking (especially the epilogue) but worth it.
