Quilt Love: Latifah Saafir

Over the weekend the Music City Modern Quilters Guild hosted Latifah Saafir, the Queen of Curves, (also a co-founder of the Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild) for workshops and a lecture. I wasn’t able to go to the two classes on designing bias tape quilts and her signature Glam Clam quilt pattern, but I made it to the lecture and trunk show on Friday night. Her presentation on “Being True to Your Inner Artist” was super inspiring, and so were her quilts!

It’s always great to see innovative quilts in person, and I loved her message of recognizing the artistry involved and how to both nurture and starve the sources of our inspiration. My biggest takeaway: Instagram is great for sharing and stimulation, but allow yourself time and space to explore your own brand of creativity. It’s too easy to get sucked into the “likes” and feedback, and forget to let yourself create for the sake of fun/exploration.

A few of my favorite quilts!

Check out the Latifah Saafir Studios website here! I can’t wait for Amelia to be ready for the Quilt Cadets 🙂 You can also see some of the class progress on the Music City MQG’s Instagram account.

As always, it was great to catch up with the ladies of the Music City MQG. I look forward to the meetings each month and it’s always fun when they host events like these; I’m so thankful I joined three years ago! Even though I haven’t devoted much time to quilting lately, I love feeding that side of myself.
