My quilt guild started two small groups of Round Robin quilts this year, but we’re also working on a guild-wide quilt. While I’m still waiting for my partner’s start for the small group, I volunteered to add a round to the guild’s quilt.
I’ve never participated in a round robin quilt before, but the idea is fun: start with a square or strip for the center, then pass it around a group of quilters, each adding to it (borders or blocks or whatever they want), and passing it on to the next person each month, until it makes it way to everyone in the group and comes back to you as a completed quilt top. And if your group is as talented as the ladies in my modern quilt guild, it’s sure to end up awesome!
The center panel was created from HST scraps when the guild participated in the Hearts for Orlando charity quilt project last year. After Libby constructed the center, Debby added a low volume patchwork border, and Katie H. added a border of rainbow strips.
I decided to break away from the borders and add on to just one side. I stuck with the bright colors and low volume background, with four friendship stars and some negative space.
I followed an online pattern for four 6″ friendship stars… but somehow they turned out to be 6 3/4″ squares… oops! I’m still not sure how that happened. So I cut new low volume squares and kept going. It actually worked out for the best because it was the perfect length to add to one side! If all the blocks were 6″, I would’ve had to add a small strip on one end to add some length. Happy accident!
Once I added the border onto one side, I flipped it around a couple times to make sure it worked from any angle. Who knows how the next person will choose to continue… that’s the fun part!
My round is done, and I’ll pass it onto the next person who volunteers. I can’t wait to see what happens next! I’ll try to keep up and share pics on the blog as it evolves, or at least the finished version.
